A Dutch Icon at a Historic Spectacle: Heesen Joins the SAIL Amsterdam Opening Parade

The wait is over. Today, August 20, 2025, Amsterdam’s River IJ emerged into life as the curtain rises on the tenth edition of SAIL Amsterdam.

This celebrated quinquennial event, a vibrant tribute to the Netherlands’ rich nautical heritage, is underway, and the world is watching as a magnificent fleet makes its grand entrance into the city.

The grand SAIL-in Parade, the traditional opening of the festival, is a spectacle of unparalleled scale. Leading the procession is the majestic “De Groene Draeck,” the official vessel of the Dutch Royal Family, a proud emblem of the nation’s unbreakable bond with the sea. Following in its wake are hundreds of vessels, from the towering masts of historic Tall Ships to an eclectic mix of classic boats, naval ships, and modern craft creating a unique spectacle.

Amidst this historic flotilla, another icon of Dutch maritime excellence, Heesen Yachts, is witnessing the spectacle from a prime vantage point. Today, Heesen is a guest aboard the stately three-masted tall ship, the Antigua. This unique experience is made possible by an invitation from Bolidt and Esthec, leaders in synthetic decking and flooring, highlighting the strong, collaborative spirit that powers the Dutch yachting industry.

From the decks of the Antigua, the full majesty of SAIL Amsterdam is unfolding in real-time. The air is alive with the sound of celebratory cannon salutes and the cheers of millions of spectators lining the banks of the river. Each passing vessel tells a story and echoes centuries of seafaring heritage while also framing the future of maritime innovation.

For Heesen, a shipyard that has built its global reputation on pioneering design and flawless construction, the symbolism is striking. Against a backdrop of historic sails and centuries-old craftmanship it is a fitting moment to be surrounded by the very heritage that informs its craft.

The presence of Heesen at SAIL, facilitated by partners like Bolidt and Esthec, underscores the vitality of the Dutch maritime sector. It demonstrates a seamless link between a proud history and an innovative future. The collaboration between these industry leaders has resulted in some of the most stunning and technologically advanced superyachts on the water today, proving that the legacy of Dutch shipbuilding is not just being preserved, but actively evolved.

As the parade makes its majestic way into the heart of Amsterdam, the excitement is palpable. Today marks just the beginning of a five-day celebration of nautical culture, camaraderie, and craftsmanship. Being present for this grand opening offers a profound reminder that the Netherlands’ enduring love affair with the sea continues.

For Heesen Yachts, recently acquired by Dutch entrepreneur and investor Laurens Last, it is a proud moment to be an integral part of this ongoing Dutch legacy, sailing amongst giants of the past while charting the course for the future of superyachting.
